5 Q’s with Splash of Spooky

1. Tell us who you are and what you do in the Halloween community.

I’m Melissa, a pumpkin spice latte aficionado obsessed with sharing Halloween content year-round. You may know me as the face behind Splash of Spooky — a website that celebrates fall and Halloween every day of the year.

I gravitate toward the fun and cutesie side of spooky season versus scary things and horror. So if you’re an October-lover like me, Splash of Spooky is the place for you.

2. Why do you love fall and Halloween?

Mainly because I hate summer. I’ll take a chilly fall day any time of the year. Also, fall has a lot of nostalgic ties for me.

Many of my favorite childhood memories happened during the -ber months. I have wonderful memories of Halloween parties and giant Thanksgiving feasts with friends and family. The entire season is just filled with warm and fuzzy feelings for me.

3. How did that love lead to starting Splash of Spooky?

I started Splash of Spooky in 2020. At the time, I was working in TV news on the digital team. I would spend eight hours a day (sometimes more) with my eyes and ears tuned into everything from the pandemic to nationwide unrest to the regular chaos of daily news coverage in a big city.

It was overwhelming more days than not. News at that time was chaotic. It still is, but 2020 was especially challenging for obvious reasons.

After my shift, I would go home and continue doom scrolling. I desperately wanted to find an online space that brought joy and positivity into my life. So I thought, why not create it? Why not create a space that simply made me and other people smile?

That’s when Splash of Spooky was born. One day in April, I just started posting photos of fall things, and slowly but surely this little community grew.

4. What’s your favorite piece you’ve written to date?

I think my favorite one is “5 of the Most Overrated Things About Fall.” As much as I love spooky season, there are plenty of things I don’t like about it, and we don’t talk about them enough. I can’t stand apple picking. It’s always hot, they’re expensive, and it’s not fun. Once was enough. And who eats that many apples anyway? Not me! That blog post is such a conversation starter. Everyone has something they don’t like about the season.

5. Where will we find you on Halloween night?

Trick-or-treating with my son around the neighborhood! This year we’re also planning to host a Halloween dinner. Somehow we’ll have to find time to gather candy and host family and friends all in one night. We’ll make it happen.
