11 Things You Need if You Love Candy Corn

Did you know October 30 is National Candy Corn Day? I know, there really IS a holiday for everything, isn’t there?

And while Halloween's most controversial candy isn't my personal favorite to eat (too sweet), I do love decorating with it!More on that in a moment, but first I want to share a little bit about the history of candy corn.

  • Candy corn was invented by George Renninger of the Wunderle Candy Company in the 1880s.

  • The sweet was originally associated with chickens, not Halloween. It was called chicken feed as part of a trend to appeal to families in agriculture. Other popular candies were shaped as turnips, chestnuts, and pumpkins.

  • It wasn't until the 1950s—and the growing popularity of Halloween in America—that candy corn became more associated with Halloween because of how much it was advertised during the season.

  • Today the National Confectioners Association estimates more than 35 million pounds of candy corn is sold every year.

  • Candy corn comes in several other color combos for other holidays, like Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, and even the Fourth of July.
