Perfect Pumpkin Eggnog

This content originally appeared in the 2023 Haunted Holidays issue of Spooky Little Halloween—The Magazine.

Much like Krampus, I love how pumpkin eggnog has crept onto store shelves everywhere during October!

I love enjoying plain ol’ eggnog during December, so finding a pumpkin version always feels like a treat.

But, like Halloween decor, it tends to disappear pretty quickly.

If you didn’t get a chance to grab some—or just want to give this a try—here’s a simple recipe to make your own!

(Plus a few modifications if raw eggs intimidate you, you’re dairy-free, or you’re vegan.)

Give this holiday classic a Halloween spin.

Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 3 Tbsp pumpkin puree
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • Nutmeg, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Crack eggs into blender and mix on medium for 1 minute.
  2. Turn blender to lowest setting and add sugar 1-2 Tbsp at a time until combined. Once all the sugar is added, blend on medium for 1 minute.
  3. Turn blender back to lowest setting and add pumpkin pie spice, pumpkin puree, milk, and heavy cream. Mix until thoroughly combined.
  4. Pour mixture into an air-tight storage container (Mason jars work great!) and store in the fridge until chilled.
  5. Pour into a glass and garnish with a dusting of nutmeg.

Alternatives:

No Raw Eggs: Raw eggs do carry a risk of carrying salmonella. If you prefer not to risk it, use store-bought regular eggnog. Add 1 1/2 cups of eggnog to a blender and combine with 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice and 3 Tbsp pumpkin puree.

Dairy-Free: Replace whole milk and heavy cream with your favorite dairy-free alternative.

Vegan: Follow your favorite recipe or use your favorite store-bought vegan eggnog. Add 1 1/2 cups of eggnog to blender and combine with 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice and 3 Tbsp pumpkin puree.

Cocktail: My current fave way to turn eggnog into a cocktail is adding 1/2 ounces each of Jamaican rum, cognac, and bourbon. Alternately, any brandy, dark rum, or whiskey works too!
