One of my favorite things to do when I travel these days is look up spooky spots to check out for you guys.
When a friend invited me to join her on a trip to Las Vegas a week before she was going...I immediately jumped into research mode.
You might not think Las Vegas is a spooky spot, but you'd be surprised by what you can find in Sin City. And these aren't just locations that are only open during the Halloween season. I visited each of these in early May, so they're all open year-round.
Check out what I found (presented in the order I visited them), which one was my favorite, and which one I probably wouldn't visit again.
Spooky Things to do in Las Vegas
The Neon Boneyard (Neon Museum)
770 Las Vegas Blvd. N.
Las Vegas, NV 89101
neonmuseum.org
Las Vegas is known for its iconic neon signs, but what happens to them when a business closes, signs fall into disrepair, or they're abandoned? They go to live in the boneyard at The Neon Museum!
Founded in 1996, this outdoor museum just north of downtown Vegas is full of signs from gambling halls, hotels, restaurants, and iconic Las Vegas businesses. There's even a spooky sign or two (pictured above!) to spot while you wander through.
And they have two boneyards for you to visit. We took a tour of the main collection, but there is also the north gallery. You can pick one to tour or enjoy both. There are also weekly portrait hour tickets if you're keen on a photo session in the boneyards.
[Beetlejuice sign is part of the main collection and is from a Tim Burton exhibit they curated from Oct. 2019 - Feb. 2020.]
Would I recommend it?
Absolutely! This was one of my favorite more general Vegas activities we did, and I lucked out by taking a guided tour of the main collection at sunset. It was so cool to be in the midst of all these neon signs as they came to life as dusk.
The Haunted Museum
600 E. Charleston Blvd.
Las Vegas, NV 89104
thehauntedmuseum.com
I went into this spot unsure of how to feel about it. On one hand, I knew a LOT of followers on social media would recommend it. It's well-known in the Halloween community. On the other hand, I knew many of my friends in the paranormal community have very strong, unfavorable opinions of the museum's (and, by extension, the collection's) owner, Zak Bagans. But I figured as long as I was in Vegas, I might as well go and make my mind up for myself.
The Haunted Museum is housed in an old mansion FULL of oddities, historical artifacts relevant to Las Vegas, occult objects, serial killer and dead celebrity memorabilia, and random collections of taxidermy and dolls. There's even what feels like a mini haunt full of clowns about halfway through the tour.
And don't forget the infamous Dybbuk box and Peggy the doll. Your well-dressed, knowledgable, and perhaps theatric tour guide will take you room to room, tell you a bit about the items surrounding you, and even, from time to time, leave you alone in a room to take it all in or hear about the objects from Zak Bagans himself—via well-produced videos, that is.
With a RIP pass, you gain access to additional rooms throughout the tour, including the house's basement where, according to local lore, dark rituals took place in the 1970s. Yes, the house itself becomes part of the experience as you learn about its dark history too.
Would I recommend it?
Maybe. If this is a bucket list item for you or if you follow the lore of any of the items displayed, go satisfy your curiosity. The tour is long (2+ hours) and worth the $50 ticket price I paid (as of May 2022). It was definitely an...experience.
But that's also what left me feeling dissatisfied with it: it was an experience. About halfway through the tour, I felt more like I was walking through a performance theater piece than a museum, and the gawking at the serial killer and dead celebrity memorabilia just left me feeling icky.
I went, I saw, but I don't think I ever need to do it again. (And FWIW, I skipped viewing the Dybbuk and Peggy because my intuition said HELL NO, GIRL.)
Tom Devlin's Monster Museum
1310 Boulder City Pkwy.
Boulder City, NV 89005
tomdevlinsmonstermuseum.com
Boulder City is a 30-minute drive southeast of Las Vegas, but this stop is well worth the trip!
At Tom Devlin's Monster Museum, you'll find replicas of all the classic monsters and horror icons from your favorite movies. Tom is a special effects artist who fell in love with making monsters. He's created many creatures for films, several of which are featured in the museum, but he also loves recreating versions of his favorites.
As you wander through this museum, which is just $20 for adult tickets (as of May 2022), you'll also be treated to a walk through monster movie history. From Nosferatu to Herman Munster to Michaels Myers and even the Killer Klowns from Outer Space, this museum includes ALL the highlights.
The best part? Photos and video are encouraged, and each monster is just dying for a selfie with you. (The Michael Myers house was my favorite.)
When you're done (or before you begin), wander the gift shop for unique tricks and treats. And if you happen to visit on a Saturday, stick around for a flick in the screening room, which is also open daily and screens films and horror documentaries at random.
Would I recommend it?
YES, ABSOLUTELY, YES! This was my favorite spooky thing I did in Las Vegas, and I'm so glad I accidentally saved it for last. I lucked out with having the entire museum to myself on a Tuesday morning, and even I, a horror novice, had the BEST time wandering through the space at my own pace, learning about iconic movies, and snapping selfies with my favorite monsters.
