5 Reasons Creep it Real OC Deserves a Spot on Your Fall Calendar
Creep It Real OC is back September 11-13 and if you've been following along here for a while, you already know I'm going to be there.
I fell hard for this event the first time I went, and every year since has only cemented it as one of my favorite stops on the SoCal Halloween calendar. (Yes, even all the way over here in Minnesota…)
If you've never made the trip out to Santa Ana for it, here are five reasons this is the year to change that.
(Especially if you live in SoCal — no excuses!)
1. The shopping is genuinely unmatched
We're talking 100+ small Halloween vendors and makers, all set up under the trees and in the historic buildings on property.
This is the kind of shopping where you leave with things you didn't know you needed: a hand-painted lantern, a tiny candy corn necklace, a purse that had absolutely no business coming home with me but did anyway.
I've met so many favorites here over the years. Bring a bigger bag than you think you need.
2. The setting is unlike any other Halloween event
Creep It Real OC takes over the Heritage Museum of Orange County, 12 acres of historic homes, gardens, and citrus groves that get transformed for the weekend. It's genuinely one of the prettiest backdrops I've ever shopped against, and it makes the whole event feel less like a convention and more like wandering through a town that decided to fully commit to October.
Start your visit with a walk through the Kellogg House, decorated this year by Diana Vogel of The Vogel Victorian. If you’ve seen her Instagram, you know how stunning her own home and event space is. I cannot wait to see what she does here.
3. Every corner is built for a photo
I mean that literally. I don't think I walked 10 feet at Creep It Real without stopping for a picture. Giant boo buckets. Ghosts floating in the trees. A skeleton family mid-cereal-bowl. Dueling Beetlejuices with a werewolf lurking in the background. Porch displays so detailed you'll want to photograph every inch of them.
And it all changes annually based on the new theme! If you're the type who plans a whole outfit around your photo ops (no judgment, I am that type), this event will not disappoint.
4. You'll run into characters, creators, and the occasional celebrity
Between the roaming costumed characters, themed meet-and-greets, and live entertainment, there's always something happening. Past years have brought live music from bands dressed head to toe in character, live painting demos, and even a packed "Nightmare Before Christmas" panel. You genuinely never know who you might run into wandering the grounds, and that's part of the fun.
5. Your ticket actually gives back
Every ticket supports the Heritage Museum of Orange County, a nonprofit that keeps this 12-acre slice of history open and running year-round. So you're shopping small, supporting local artists, and helping fund a nonprofit museum, all while having the best kind of Halloween weekend. Hard to beat that!
