How to Style a Little Black Dress for Halloween

Got a closet full of little black dresses? Then you've got a closet full of Halloween styling options!

Dolly and Dotty, a new-to-me vintage and rockabilly inspired clothing brand from the UK, reached out with the offer to check out their brand.

And while they do carry Halloween prints, it was the black dresses that caught my eye.

This one, in particular.

Back in 2019, I started filling up my closet with almost exclusively black dresses for work because I was sick of putting together outfits.

Now, they’re one of my favorite base layers to dress up, dress down, or style for a themed look.

Which is exactly what we’re doing today! Using the Dolly and Dotty Elizabeth Vintage Style Mesh Party Dress, here are three Halloween looks I created from my closet.

Note: I’m 5’11 and wear a US 22 or anywhere from a 3X-5X, depending on the brand. I sized up in this dress since I find UK sizing runs small on my body. This dress is a US 24 and fits perfectly.

Dolly and Dotty offers up to a US 26 in their sizing.

Styling 1: Comfy and Casual

First up: something casual! I spent a good chunk of my early professional career working for Girl Scouts, and scarves were part of the adult uniform we wore for donor events.

While it does have some flight attendant vibes, I just love the look! I think this bright orange candy corn scarf is the perfect compliment to this dress — especially when paired with a fun bag and a custom pair of casual shoes!

  • Dress from Dotty and Dolly

  • Scarf from Dollar Tree, several years ago

  • Pumpkin bag from A Black Star

  • Haunted house earrings from a small biz that’s no longer open

  • Custom painted shoes from Silver Dragonfly Shoes

Styling 2: Wonderfully Witchy

Going for a witchy feel in a solid black dress is always a win, no matter the time of year. I might consider swapping out the hat for an every day wear of this look to feel a little less costume-y, but I love how all of these accessories gave this dress a completely different feel overall.

  • Dress from Dotty and Dolly

  • Witch hat from The Beheaded

  • Rosy duster from Foxblood

  • Hand painted bag from Tiff Studios

  • Witch House necklace from Verona Black (custom length)

  • Cauldron earrings found at a local craft show

  • Shoes from Old Navy

Styling 3: Halloween Queen

The perfect October fit! Nothing is more classic than some pops of orange with a stunning black dress. This was the first look that jumped out of my closet when I started pulling items together, and I’m already hunting for somewhere to wear it this fall.

Get the look:

  • Dress from Dotty and Dolly

  • Pumpkin Eater duster from Lively Ghosts

  • Hand painted bag from My Eclectic Mind

  • Jack-o-lantern cameo necklace from Dulce Calaveritas
