When the weather turns warm, there's nothing better than a nice leisurely cemetery stroll. They are one of the few places I still frequent in late spring and early summer in Houston, despite the heat, because there is usually a ton of shade from all the gorgeous trees.
Add a little breeze, and it's downright pleasant.
While a lot of my time in cemeteries lately is spent getting in a workout (usually while listening to this playlist), I do enjoy a slow stroll where I can just wander.
And, of course, a cemetery stroll requires a few things, like comfy shoes, a good camera and a journal for notes. Here are 12 things I'd throw in my tote bag for a cemetery stroll.
12 Things You Need for a Cemetery Stroll
Cemetery Symbol Guidebook
Earlier this week, my friend Tui Snider dropped by the blog to share five common cemetery symbols and their meanings. If you want to dig into headstone symbols even deeper, I recommend grabbing a copy of her book! GET IT HERE
Cemetery Sketchbook
While you wander, you might want to make notes of names, dates or symbols you see. Or, if you're more artistically inclined than me, you might want a dedicated cemetery sketchbook. I love this one from Meagan Meli. GET IT HERE
Bat Parasol
A cemetery stroll begs for a gorgeous, gothic parasol in my world. I'm loving this black bat one. GET IT HERE
Cemetery T-shirt
I've been eyeing this T-shirt from Discount Cemetery for a while now. There are SO many amazing cemetery-inspired tees you could wear, but this one always conjures up an image of skeletons digging graves...which I love. GET IT HERE
Spooky Picnic Basket
Did you know in countries outside of the U.S., there are days where families take a picnic to their local cemetery to visit their deceased loved ones? We just learned about this in The Halloween Book Club while reading "The Graveyard Apartment", and I think it's such a lovely practice. If we did more of that here, this is the picnic basket I would take! It's sold out at the moment, but keep an eye on Backstitch Bruja's Instagram for her next shop update. GET IT HERE
Instax Camera
So yes, your smartphone has a camera and it is arguably better quality than most DSLR cameras these days...but it could also be fun to play with an Instax camera for some cemetery photos. I have an older model and love this Polaroid-style camera for unique photos. Plus, this model looks just like something Lydia Deetz would use. GET IT HERE
Bat Wing Sunglasses
Who doesn't need a new pair of spooky shades for a cemetery stroll? I love these frames from Unique Vintage! GET THEM HERE
Skeleton Shoes
You'll want comfy shoes for wandering a cemetery, and these custom skeleton foot Vans are just the thing. GET THEM HERE
Cemetery Tote Bag
You might need a bag to carry your sketchbook and camera in, and I love this one for the play on words...and because it glows in the dark! GET IT HERE
Cemetery Sticker
The perfect sticker for your sketchbook...or your car. I own two and love all the detail in this design. GET IT HERE
Cemetery Enamel Pin
If you know me, you know I can't do a product post without at least ONE enamel pin. I love them! This simple cemetery scene would pop on any outfit...and, like the tote bag above, it also glows in the dark! GET IT HERE
Tombstone Locket
And finally, I truly saved the best for last in this post. I am IN. LOVE. with this tombstone locket! GET IT HERE
