Every Friday this fall, I'm skipping the big box aisles and hunting down small shops making genuinely one-of-a-kind Halloween goods instead.
This week's find isn't just a shop — it's an entire little world, built one pumpkin at a time.
The shop: Pumpkidz
Pumpkidz started the way a lot of the best things do: with a kid asking for something that didn't exist yet. After a career-ending injury ended her work in EMS, Rae decided to stay home with her son and build something of her own instead. He asked her to make him a new lovey, and what came out of it was Stem — the first Pumpkidz character, and the start of a whole cast that's grown ever since with the help of her family.
Five years and more than 500 sales later (with a perfect 5-star rating across more than 100 reviews and Etsy Star Seller status to show for it), Pumpkidz has turned into something bigger than a single plush doll: a whole storybook world of hand-sewn, 14-inch pumpkin-headed characters, each with their own name, personality, and outfit.
There's Trixie in her pink and purple paisley, sunny Maple in her sunflower overalls, moody Shade and Arachne the Web Weaver for anyone who wants their pumpkin a little darker, and a rotating cast of others up for "adoption," as the shop puts it.
There's even a companion novel — A Pumpkin's Secret: A Pumpkidz Journey, a signed middle-grade fantasy book for ages 10 and up — so the world these dolls live in doesn't stop at the doll itself.
What I'd add to cart
A Pumpkidz plush — pick a named character or choose the "Pick-A-Pumpkidz Patch" option and let it be a surprise. Browse the dolls →
A Jumptogz outfit — the snap-closure outfits made for the dolls, from checkerboard and bat prints to florals, are sold separately so you can restyle a plush again and again. Browse Jumptogz →
The plush and signed book bundle — if you want the full story, this pairs a doll with a signed copy of A Pumpkin's Secret. Browse bundles →
Why I love this one
What gets me about Pumpkidz isn't just that the dolls are sweet, though they absolutely are — it's that this whole thing exists because a mom said yes to her kid's imagination and then kept building.
One of the shop's reviews sums it up better than I could: a customer said she was "obsessed with the story," name-checking one of the characters by name like an old friend. That's the sign of a shop that's built something people actually attach to, not just something they buy once and forget.
If you've got a kid (or an inner kid) who loves a good story wrapped around a good plush toy, this is the shop to visit before you reach for something mass-produced.
