All October posts are part of the Countdown to Halloween!
If your idea of a Halloween playlist begins and ends with “Monster Mash,” “Thriller,” and “This is Halloween,” you’re missing out on a whole world of spooky, moody, and delightfully eerie tunes.
Don’t get me wrong — I’ll never turn down a chance to zombie-dance to Michael Jackson or sing along with Bobby “Boris” Pickett. But Halloween has so much more to offer musically than the same three songs you’ve heard at every costume party since 1995.
October is a season that deserves its own soundtrack. It’s the crackle of fallen leaves underfoot, the hum of streetlights on a foggy night, the drumbeat of your heart as you press play on your favorite scary movie. It’s mischief, mystery, and just a hint of magic — and the right playlist can capture all of it.
That’s why I’ve pulled together a mix for everyone who knows Halloween isn’t just a holiday, it’s a feeling.
From witchy indie rock and haunting instrumentals to vintage horror themes and darkwave gems, these songs set the mood for everything from pumpkin carving to late-night ghost hunts.
So this year, when you’re lighting your jack-o’-lanterns or hosting a movie marathon, go beyond the usual suspects. Turn down the lights, turn up the volume, and let these tracks remind you that Halloween has a rhythm all its own.
