Trick-or-Treat Dirty Sodas

How do you put a Halloween spin on the dirty soda trend? By making one a trick and one a treat, of course!

But first, what the heck IS a "dirty soda"? More or less, it's adding additional flavors to your favorite soda.

The idea and name originated with Swig, a soda shop in Utah. It's since been popularized on reality TV shows set in Utah, like "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives" and "Real Housewives of Salt Lake City," as well as become a trend on TikTok with accounts like @pickmeupzac doing a "Roll for Soda" series.

Here in Minnesota, we've got our own chain that's opened a few locations around the Twin Cities. It's appropriately named...Sota. 😂

Bon Appetit magazine has a great article covering the evolution of the dirty soda if you want to learn more.

So what's IN a dirty soda? It is:

  • A soda of your choice as the base

  • Flavored syrups or fruit juices (as many or as few as you want!)

  • A splash of cream at the end (half-and-half, coconut cream, etc.)

  • Fresh fruit for garnish (limes, lemons, cherries, etc.)

For example, the original dirty soda that started Swig was a Diet Coke with fresh lime, coconut syrup, and coconut cream. (Suddenly my love of Dr. Pepper with a healthy squeeze of fresh lemon doesn't seem so weird!)

The result is a fun flavored drink that's a great alternative to coffee or cocktails.

And the thing I love about dirty sodas: there's no right or wrong way to make one, which makes them incredibly versatile!

So to celebrate that, here's a fun idea as we head into spooky season for making 'trick-or-treat' dirty sodas.

Let's make trick-or-treat dirty sodas

This idea popped in my head one day as I was walking through my local grocery store, and I spotted these Minnesota-brand sodas. I'd been toying with the idea of doing a Halloween spin on a dirty soda, but the question was...how?

I started browsing flavors and selected two based purely on color: an orange soda and a cola.

Then I noticed another similar option with a twist, and the creativity kicked in: What a trick it would be to get one flavor when you're expecting another!

Trick-or-treat dirty sodas were born. 😂

The idea here is to make two drinks:

  • One that's a more friendly, acceptable flavor

  • One that's a more unusual, unexpected flavor

The friendly one is the treat, the unusual one is the trick.

Then serve them to your friends and have them decide which is which!

I should note my goal wasn't to make the trick drink gross (though you could go that route if you wanted...) — just more complex with unexpected flavors.

What you'll need:

  • Two sodas as a base

  • Flavored syrups

  • Cream of your choice

  • Fresh fruit to garnish

How I made mine:

I kept these super simple:

  • A cup of ice (filled to the top)

  • One soda poured over almost to the top

  • About 1 ounce of half-and-half

  • Half an orange wheel to garnish

Then repeat for your second drink!

I used half-and-half for mine, but a coconut cream or even one of the Coffee Mate dirty soda creamers would be fun to try. Coffee creamers work in a pinch too and could add a fun flavor dimension as well.

You can add flavored syrups of any kind — Monin is a popular ready-to-use brand with a TON of flavors. If you can't wait for shipping, I've had luck finding these in liquor stores in the past, but you can also buy them on Amazon or directly from the Monin website.

If you prefer, you could also make your own — All Recipes has a great how to piece for making flavored syrups.

If you opt for your own version, here is the 'recipe' I'd recommend:

  • A cup of ice (filled to the top)

  • Soda poured over almost to the top

  • 1-2 pumps per flavored syrup you want to use OR 1/2 - 1 ounces of a homemade flavored simple syrup (adjust to taste)

  • About 1 ounce of cream (I used half-and-half)

  • An orange wheel to garnish

Once you make the drink, mix and test the flavors, then adjust. And while the key to a dirty soda is adding flavor...doing syrups and creams together is totally up to you!

Seriously, the thing I love about these is how customizable they are!

Go for cream or dairy-less drinks. Make your own custom syrups. Pick one, pass on the other. Lean into Halloween flavors, like chocolate, apple, or pumpkin.

There are no real rules for creating your own drink recipes.

You could even give something like these flavored purees a try! (And yes, there's a pumpkin spice one.)

I want to give these another try when I find some pumpkin-flavored sodas again!

So...which is the trick and which is the treat?

Treat: Treat Street Creamsicle

My treat drink is this pineapple orange soda, which was absolutely delicious. I'm usually not big on orange soda, but this pineapple orange soda surprised me and ended up being my favorite of the two!

Full disclosure: after these sat for about 5 minutes post-photos, the half-and-half I used started to separate in the pineapple orange soda. If I made it again, I'd definitely grab some coconut cream to try instead.

Trick: Cursed Cola

This was the drink that sparked the trick idea! It's one thing to take a sip of something you expect to be a cola...but an orange cola? Now that's strange and unusual!

The cola itself ended up being incredibly sweet, and the drink could have used a heavy squeeze of fresh orange to brighten the flavor...but the half-and-half blended well in this drink. It was a fun trick, indeed!
