Spooky Movie Night: Popcorn Bar

This post is part of my Spooky Movie Night series, featured in the 2022 issue of Spooky Little Halloween—The Magazine.

We enter on a dim living room. The space is filled with candles and cozy string lights.

The couch is piled high with cozy, soft blankets and squishy pillows. The coffee table features mounds of popcorn and every Halloween candy imaginable.

Cut to the crack of a soda bottle being opened, the sound of the fizz escaping. You can already taste the sweet bubbles dancing on your tongue in the first sip. And behind it all, the soft glow of a television screen waiting to play your favorite spooky flick.

Welcome to our Halloween movie night!

In the 2022 issue of Spooky Little Halloween—The Magazine, Andrew and Devin from Your Best Halloween Ever and myself put together our own movie night.

This week, I’m sharing our ideas with you to use all spooky season—they’re perfect for enjoying a movie night with a group of friends, your partner, or as a theater of one.

How to create a popcorn bar for spooky movie night

There’s a certain joy in making the perfect popcorn—just the right blend of salt and melted butter makes it amazing, but no two of us eat our popcorn the same way. One-up your local theater by giving your movie night guests a chance to create their own blend with a popcorn bar.

Provide your guests with a container for their popcorn, then have them choose a popcorn or two, throw in a few mix-ins, and add a topping to create their own popcorn bar blend.

Classic popcorn holders, like we used, can be found at party supply stores, but cereal bowls or even Halloween mugs work just as well.

Dress up your popcorn boxes for Halloween by adding your own stickers, washi tape, or scrapbook paper cut-outs.

Then you’re ready for your popcorn bar. You don’t have to include everything from this list—pick a couple items from each section or come up with your own.

Bonus points for adding mix-ins or toppings that tie into your movie!

POPCORN

  • Plain popcorn (salted or unsalted)

  • Buttered popcorn

  • Cheese popcorn

  • Caramel popcorn

  • Kettle corn

MIX-INS

  • Bite-size chocolate candies

  • Bite-size sour candies

  • Bite-size fruit candies

  • Marshmallows

  • Pretzels

  • Nuts

  • Cheese crackers

  • Dried fruit

TOPPINGS

  • Flavored salt

  • Parmesan cheese

  • Dried herbs

  • Melted butter

  • Truffle olive oil

  • Hot sauce

Mix it all together, and you have the perfect spooky movie night snack that’s perfectly customized to…YOU!

What would you add to your popcorn bar?
